Brooke Smith:
Yoga Therapist, Yoga Teacher, TCTSY-F
As the owner of Inner Door Yoga Therapy my role is to facilitate your journey.
My own life has been guided by deep curiosity of the internal world along with a personal fascination with science, psychology and movement. Yoga empowered me to shift from being mind-dominated to feeling deeply embodied. Life for me is an ever evolving practice of finding my brave and free soul.
From a young age I understood and valued the therapeutic benefits of movement from horse riding, ballet, weight-training to running.
I began a deeper understanding of the body through studying a Bachelor of Science (Anatomy, Physiology and Zoology). This led to my third year research project examining the long term impact of stress on the body right from fetal development. Gaining understanding of the changes in physiology due to our high-pressured culture, trauma, chronic and acute stress exposure offered me a more compassionate lens with which to view humans, mental health and disease development.
After my first child in 2003 I was extremely challenged, mentally and physically, by trying to conform to cultural ideals of body image. I found losing weight harder than giving birth! In 2007 I became a personal trainer and group fitness instructor to motivate and assist others on their arduous journey. Teaching Les Mills Body Balance has been a great love of mine since 2010. This programs blends yoga, tai chi and pilates together with music.
Four children, a divorce and a life changing yoga certificate later I sensed a gap in who benefited from yoga. Even though yoga can be for anyone I questioned whether it really was available to anyone. Particularly for people living with stories and bodies for whom entering a general yoga class or gym could feel challenging, overwhelming or perhaps not even being considered as a possibility. I chose to pursue Yoga Therapy to apply yoga to a multitude of health conditions. I chose to pursue Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) as an evidence based trauma treatment practice because there is such a great need for healing in our world – healing for your body, nervous system and relationships. My wish is to bring the theraputic benefits of yoga to life in a myraid of settings, outside of the class environment.
I look forward to working with you in way that honours your body and your story whilst shifting towards a newfound befriending of yourself.
